Situation:
You have been left with the task of assigning a project to certain employees. This project is one that requires certain skills related to the industry and can only be truly understood with time. It is also a time-sensitive project and must be started and completed early in the work day, as time zones are a major hindrance. You have a pool of 20 employees to choose from, 10 of which are "veterans"; 10 of which are "newbies".

The question:
Which employee(s) do you assign to this task? When do you start them on it?

The correct answer:
One or two of the experienced, seasoned employees should be assigned this task as soon as their shift begins. One factor in choosing such an employee should be that their shift is in the morning.

What actually happened:
Two "n00bs", whose first day was the day the task was assigned, were chosen to complete it. However, as they were new, it was necessary for them to go through training, not for the task, but simple retail training. This training resulted in the employees not beginning the task until 3/4 of the work day was done.

Needless to say, when I returned to work today, I had to re-do the entire project, as well as my usual (though heightened because of the time of year) work load.

Living in a society that seems more and more driven by the "real" lives of celebrities, it is beyond impossible to not become exposed to the goings-on of today's "elite":

I could care less about all the hype surrounding the Beckham's move to Hollywood...

My world will not change if Tom and Katie procreate again...

Seeing the pictures of another celebrity wedding will not suddenly make me want to fly to the altar...

And yet...for some sick and demented reason which speaks volumes to my truly sadistic nature...I love love LOVE it when Celebu-Brats end up either having a complete breakdown or are finally slap with the cruel stick of the real world.

During the comedy that was the Paris Hilton prison stint I was captivated. On the day she was sent back to jail I spent most of my day glued to CNN.com for constant updates on whether or not she was going back in...

When Britney started to exhibit signs of a mental breakdown, I laughed giddily as she began her downward spiral. Recent news says she's had a complete breakdown while being interviewed by OK!, which comes out this Friday...can't wait for that story...

And, as I'm sure everyone not living under a rock is aware of (the 24 hour news stations devoted their entire segments at midnight last night to this story): Lindsay Lohan has been arrested...again. She's been indicted on a bevy of charges ranging from DUI to possession...all this before even having her hearing for her DUI/Hit and Run on Memorial Day...

And while I've been gleefully reading anything and everything I can find on these stories, my pleasure stems from two different places. The cynical side of me just wishes that we could find something better to talk about than what these people had to eat (or lack thereof). "But Courtney, you've devoted this entire post to talk of them..." Yes, it may seem hypocritical but my point is one of complaint, rather than glorifying what has been happening. While I've enjoyed watching these celebs fall from grace, There are better things the news needs to be reporting!!

The other reason I garner such pleasure from these arrests is the fact that celebrities are finally being forced to live by the rules of our common society. I'm sick and tired of hearing of these people being arrested for drugs or DUI's or rape etc. and NEVER seeing the inside of a jail. Yes, you have been gifted with a skill...Yes, this skill has put you in the limelight (why, I don't know, but it has)...But that doesn't give you a license to live in your own world with your own set of rules. Plus, how any Celebu-Brat gets a DUI in the first place is beyond me...you have enough money that when you're blitzed out of your mind you can hire a whole army of flipping cars to take you wherever you desire...call a limo, I'm sure they're on your speed dial next to your dealer...

I don't wish these people harm...I hope they can fight whatever demons they may be facing and use this experience to better themselves...but I just wish that they could be held accountable for their actions like ever other person...

**Backstory: Jack London is a pretty important figure for the area because he was born here/died here/gave money to the town. One of his stories is also the inspiration for our new (as of 2002) mascot - the Seawolf (no, not the submarine cause that would be cool). We switched our mascot because people felt Cossacks were just a little too "un-PC" for this day and age (since when was raping and pillaging an entire culture a bad thing...). As part of some festival/conference/orgy to Mr. London, we've temporarily been carrying several of his titles.**

Wednesday morning a man comes into the store looking for the Jack London books. As we had not yet put them on display, I went into the back to retrieve them. He peruses the books and then proceeds to leave them (all ten of them) on my text shelves - obviously, not where they go...whatever...I've moved on. The books are the properly displayed, complete with so much signage that as long as you (to quote Cameron Diaz/Penelope Cruz in "Vanilla Sky") "Open your eyes" , you can easily find them.

Thursday morning, same man comes back into the store and walks directly to where he had left the books before. As they are no longer there he flies into a complete tizzy questioning their whereabouts. "Oh, I'm sorry sir. We've moved those books into their display at the front of the store. Here, follow me." I point them out...I walk away...happy, happy...

Friday morning, same man comes into the store. He seems far more frantic than Thursday (kinda rushed and twitchy). He starts wandering the text shelves (mind you, NOT on the same text shelves they were left on Wednesday and definitely no where near the display, which I showed him THE DAY BEFORE) looking for the books. Once again, said man wanders to my desk and acts like I've personally hid the books from him. When I walk him over to THE SAME DISPLAY as Thursday, he pretty much blows me off and looks through the books again.

Not only do I not believe that he purchased a single one of the books that he was so frantically looking for, but he gave me attitude for the fact that he couldn't find the same books he was looking for the day before...WHEN THEY HADN'T MOVED...common sense people, common sense...

A lot of things I see make me want to learn how to hone the fine art of social Darwinism (ie - Death by Stupidity). Since I’ve yet to discover a way to accomplish this without getting caught (hiding bodies is harder than one might think…), I figured the next avenue open to me would be semi-mindless rantings. Not horribly cheery, I know (there may be a few posts like that intermixed).

But don’t worry – I’m not seriously homicidal, just cynical.

So, there is a very distinct possibility that they are going to make me a manager at my work after the end of the year. The head of the book department is retiring and his second in command (Marcia) is taking over and everyone in the store wants me to take her job. The only thing that seems to be standing in my way is that they're not sure if they're actually going to replace her. Yet, Marcia keeps talking as if it's already for sure, making plans and such about how it's gonna to be once I start working there. Though my reason for not cheating would have nothing to do with society. I needed a study break from the inane questions that my women writers class have asked me to answer. This prof. is retarded and she already hates me 'cause i questioned her teaching style - wtf? so once i actually decide to express an opinion about a class to te prof. and she can't even have the courtesy to pretend like she was listening to me. Oy.

In other news, I went to a bar called Rita's on Saturday and I got so fricking drunk that I decided Karaoke was the best idea ever!! I kid you not - I got up there with my friend Mike and we proceeded to sing "Total Eclipse of the Heart" Two reasons why this was funny: 1) singing a break-up song with your gay friend always inspires ironic moments and 2) I don't fricking know the words nor the tune except for the chorus - let's just say I belted it out but i wasn't necessarily on cue!! sweet!!! But I had a blast and while we weren't up there singing we were dancing to other's songs and this nice picture was taken of me - I'm not sure what kinda face I'm making and I swear I have on more clothes than it looks like - which is odd 'cause usually i don't when i go out - but for once I was trying to be...shall we say, less whorish than usual. I also like how the guy on the left is leering at me - that is so classic!!

I love it when the topic of conversation during a game of spades is my sex life :)

In other news, I'm getting tired of High School - thought i already lived through that. I'm seriously starting to consider moving into the house a month earlier just so i can get away from it. Short recap on my opinions on the situation:
~Notes should be banned - grow some balls and tell us if you have a problem
~the difference between 1130 and 1200 is not big enough to cause a problem like this
~hypocrisy is...well, i think i've stated my opinion on hypocrisy enough in the past
God I'm so over this - I need my house now!!! I'm really close to forgetting that I like to keep the peace and just start some fun fights!! :) Sounds like a plan to me! tee hee

So, my friends and I have been looking at houses to move into next year and we called up this one place that we absolutly LOVED on like monday or tuesday and the guy seemed to really like Tom and it sounded like we were good to go - whichw as amazing because we were also told that 30 other people had called before us about the house. Our spirits were a little low 'cause a lot of places were going fast and it seemed like we weren't gonna get a nice place. So, we're driving by it tonight to show another friend when Tom gets a call - WE GOT THE HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's four bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, huuuugggeee rooms with beautiful tile in the kitchen, a fireplace (sweet!!!), a pool and spa (oh god yeah!!!!!) and, get this: A FUCKING ATRIUM!!!!!!!!!!! How much does that fucking rock!!!!!!!! Its only like 3 miles from school, in a beautiful neighborhood, a hop, skip, and a jump from a park. It's perfect!!!! I just can't beleive how lucky we got!!!!!!! So, now I'm gonna have to go out and celebrate!!!!!!!!

This is why courtney shouldn't be allowed to type on aim when she's drunk...

Got back from Vegas late wed/early thursday - God, I had such an incredible time!!!!! Too much happened to go into it but it was a great way to spend spring break!! I'm glad that the cold that seems to continue to be passed back and forth between the book department waited until thursday to hit me very hard. Then again, maybe it was just masked by all the alcohol, hmmm...

So last night I went all the way back to when i first started this thing and i was reading the entries and i couldn't help but laugh!! I can't beleive how different I've become since then. I knew that I had changed and all of that over the years but reading about the way i handled situations and just what was important in my life back then just really made it that much more apparent that I have grown over the years. Freshman year if you had asked me if I would be living my life the way I am now, I would've told you you were full of shit - but I'm having the time of my life and I couldn't be happier!!!

A lot of things have happened when it comes to my crazy roommate Barbara, too many in fact to recap, but, from the looks of things, she's about 98% gone from the house!! SWEET!!!! Wouldn't it be nice if the school actually let us know what was going on in our own house, but I guess that's just too much to ask for. Bye all...

Have you ever just wanted to go up to someone, take them by the shoulders and shake them while you tell them that we are not 12 years old anymore, this childish bullshit needs to stop, and to fucking GROW UP!!!!!!! God, I'm so fucking sick of all this girl drama that is revolving around me!!! Stop talking shit about my friends and assume it's not gonna get back to me and act like all is well and good between us!! Also, if you are completely incapable of acting like an adult, at least complain about shit that MAKES SENSE!!!!!! People are misreading situations in what would be a completely laughable way if it weren't for the fact that it's hurting people - people who don't deserve it!!!!!! I'm about 2 seconds from causing a scene and it's merely because a) technically it's not my business and b) it would just make things far worse for the parties involved that I continue to hold my tongue. I think what really makes me wanna do something about it the most (well, besides the obvious) is most of the things that are being said would make far more sense if they were being said about me, but for some reason they are being attached to my friend!!! It's gonna happen and it's gonna happen soon and I'm really not looking forward to the aftermath...

I am in completely new and unknown territory in my life and while I should be scared or nervous or confused or overannalytical...the list goes on, all I am is happy. I don't know what tomorrow will bring nor do I really want to and that is strange for me. I always seem to want to have everything mapped out or put in a neat little package (tied with a bow and everything) and while sometimes my package isn't conventional, per se, I usally want/need/seek the clear answer. But with this it seems like it would be different and not as wonderful if it were all laid out for me...and I'm loving every minute of it... *contented sigh*

In other non-philosophical, innuendo-filled vernacular, I went and saw "Les Mis" tonight with some friends over at the Santa Rosa high school. While they did lose points for cutting out parts of songs (usually my fav parts at that), re-arranging the order of songs (WTF mate?), and making the prostitutes look like they would be more at home in 19th century Old West rather than Paris (Can-Can anyone?), overall it was a very good show. The kids could sing surprisingly well though it was funny to hear which boys hadn't had the pleasure of their balls dropping yet - gotta love high notes with cracked voices!! But the real interesting part of the evening was the fact that it just made me feel really old. I never feel old!!! I'm one of the youngest people among my group of friends and yet, being around all those high schoolers and their petty dramas just made me feel old (oh, wait, that's right, even people at 22 and 23 still act like retarded 12 years olds - god, hypocrisy pisses me off!! random tangent, sorry). Then, I started thinking about it - in 4 months, I'm gonna be 22 - that's a scary thought!!! Sure, 25 is a big one for women, but 22!!! I don't wanna be 22, 21 is quite fine with me thank you very much!! God, did I need a Guinness when I got outta there!!! And then, to just add insult to injury, we walk outta the theater and I reach for a cigarette, quite second nature. Well, then my friends start yelling at me (playfully) about how we're on a H.S. campus and role model and influential and blah blah blah...I explained how I'm not their parents, it's not my job to teach them those "values", not to mention that if this children decide to start smoking it's not gonna be b/c they saw me light up. But, I had the decency to wait until we were on the sidewalk and technically off school grounds (but that was only cause it too me that long to open the damn pack!!!).

If the night had ended there it would have been a fun evening...but it didn't...so instead, it was a fantastic evening...

So, I've discovered something terribly interesting over the past few days (well, interesting to me at least) - apparently, my writing style on aim is so damn distinct that people can tell when they aren't talking to me. The other day Crystal was sitting at my computer and talking to Taylor and even though I was dictating to her exactly what she should type, Taylor knew that either something was wrong or it wasn't me talking. The same thing keeps happening over and over again and I just find it so strange!! I never knew I had a distinctive aim speak!!

I know that was boring to you all but I felt like sharing! :)

This made me laugh soo hard...

So, I just bought my plane tickets for vegas for spring break!! It's pretty exciting that it's actually happening but let me tell ya, it's freaking me out realizing that I'm gonna have to get on a plane! But, at least I'll be with friends and I can drink on the plane. :) In other news I'm getting closer and closer to having to have a conversation with one of my friends that I'm really dreading. It's really not going to go over well and things are gonna be really weird afterwards. I'm hoping that I'm just making things out to be worse than they really are but when it comes to this particular person, i don't really think i'm over-reacting - damn! But, oh well, i'll get through it.

Going to the city this weekend to go to some clubs - some drinks and dancing is always fun. Not sure if she's gonna bail like she always does or if she'll really show up this time. I'm hoping she bails, cause it will allow for a much more stress free time for myself, as selfish as that is. Plus, it's gotten to the point where i really don't enjoy hanging out with her, as fucked up as that sounds. Oh well, what's gonna happen is gonna happen and there's no point in fighting it.

Caffine overdose (11-12 cups of espresso in roughly 36 hours - who would have ever though me, of all people could shake from too much coffee? It boggles the mind) + irregular sleeping schedule + stress overload + wwwwwaaayyyyy too much nicotine (damn rhetoric final and me choosing to write about the rhetoric of cigarette ads - yeah, that one was fucking brilliant for you, Courtney) + mainlining alcohol = Sleeping good tomorrow!!!!!

THANK GOD FINALS ARE OVER!!!!!! Now, I'm gonna go party it up at yachti!!

Culver City vice-mayor and councilman Albert M. Vera, Sr. apparently interfered with the August 7 drug arrest of his son, Albert, Jr.

An officer says Vera Sr. threatened her and snatched his son's car keys from her hands, according to documents reviewed by KFI NEWS.

Plus - the officer claims the Culver City police chief ordered her to leave the threats out of her police report.

So, yeah, my mom just told me about this. She says that Albert Vera, Jr. was pulled over in the Coco's parking lot and the cops searched his car and found drugs. Someone called Senior and he rushed over and took the keys from the woman's hands, then the police chief tried to cover it up. So they finally arrested and charged Senior for his actions. Apparently at one point when Junior was a cop he was asked for a urine sample, refused, and they kicked him off, only to have Senior show up later with a cup, but the suspension or whatever still stood. So then they find him at the Ice Rink in full uniform with a gun impersonating an officer. But he got away scott free for that one as well. I tried to find a written transcript of the interviews but they only have the sound versions, which are about halfway down the page. It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

~WTF kinda crack were they smoking cause we sold outta those on Monday. Gotta love when people try to tell you that you're wrong...

So we finally finished organizing the books for inventory next week but I get the feeling that we are gonna have to do it again before then cause people are gonna mess it up. I saw a girl pull out 20 books that I had organized b/c she was looking for a good used book. WTF!! Also, why is it that work is boring as hell all day until 3 when we get really fucking busy? It never fails!! We've been having a lot of people come in saying that we don't have any more books for their class so Bob decides that we need to see how many books we have and how many people have actually enrolled in the classes. Now, normally it wouldn't be that big of a deal except for the fact that we really wanted to avoid having to count things more than once before inventory and now we have to do just that!! But oh well, at least it is a project to work on.

So, we finally got a hold of the lady who teaches the AMCS 420 class (well, got a hold of in the sense that she called back and left a message). This class has just been a constant thorn in our side. First off, people come in looking for two books that she never told us she was going to use, so now we need to rush order those. Then, we find out through the grapevine that she wasn't really planning on using two of the books that she did order but since everyone has it, they'll use it for the week and then return it on Friday. To top it off, she leaves us the message saying that no, she never said she wasn't going to use the 2 that she order and that she specifically ordered the two that we didn't get - except for the fact that we called her back when she made the order and she confirmed that she didn't want them. So, its pretty much because of her and other teachers that just make up random numbers for the size of their class that Taylor and I have a new project.

In other news, SOAR, our orientation for freshman has been going on for a week and I almost got trampled today by a bunch of kids waiting to go to lunch!!! I swear to god, if one more bumped into me I was gonna turn around and whack 'em upside the head. It was like running a fucking gauntlet just to get my mail...

So, after work I got my nails done and I did something that I haven't done in a couple of years - took the bus. Dun Dun Dun!!! (yeah, sorry, had to do it) WEll, that went fine and all but after I was done the guy who does my nails and his wife offered to drive me home - but only he took me home. It was really, really uncomfortable. I mean, it was soo fucking sweet, but at the same time, I see this guy for an hour 2 a month and that was just kinda strange. Not gonna happen again, let me tell you...

well, today was productive, busy, and annoying all at the same time - gotta love days like those...
